About The Workshops

Yoga For Depression- Amy Weintraub

Experiential Lectures

LifeForce Yoga® as an Adjunct Treatment for Mood Management

This experiential lecture will take a somatic approach to mood disturbance and treatment. Learn about the studies that link positive mental health with Yogic practices, including Yogic breathing exercises, postures and meditations. We will review the physiological changes occurring in the body during Yoga practice that produce the immediate “feel good” affect and learn about the evidence for the cumulative benefits that Yoga produces in the mind and body.  In addition to a consideration of the Yogic principles, philosophy and practices that make the daily practice of Yoga beneficial in maintaining a balanced mood, we will explore the therapeutic benefits of long holding and release of a yoga posture. Experience for yourself the shift in your own outlook as we practice a few simple exercises that can change your life and the lives of your patients.  Power Point and Experiential.

The Yogic Science of Positive Mental Health

Learn about the studies that link positive mental health with Yogic practices, including Yogic breathing exercises, postures and meditations. Find out about the physiological
changes occurring in the body during Yoga practice that produce the immediate “feel
good” affect, and learn about the evidence for the cumulative effects that Yoga produces
in the mind and body. Experience for yourself the shift in your own outlook as we practice a few simple exercises that you can practice at home and teach to your clients.

Self-fulfilling Prophecy
Learn how you and your clients can take an active role in the recovery from, management of and even amelioration of symptoms of depression and anxiety. Studies show that when depressed patients are encouraged to actively participate in their treatment, they are more likely to recover. Weintraub shares her own active involvement in her recovery from depression through Yogic techniques and how these techniques have helped millions of practitioners restore biochemical and psychological balance.

The Therapeutic Use of Long Holding

Somatic Psychologists believe that what we have experienced in relationship with our
original caregivers or in subsequent traumatic experiences can not only alter the neuronal
pathways in our brains but can also be stored in the body as stiffness or numbness.
Learn how Yoga can assist the release of these energy blocks in the body through the
therapeutic holding and release of a yoga posture.

The Therapeutic Use of the Breath

Learn about the Yogic science of Pranayama and how and why mood can be altered
with simple breathing exercises. Find out about current research that demonstrates as
high as a 73% recovery rate from major depression with the practice of a Yogic breathing
technique. Try out some of these Pranayama breathing exercises for yourself and feel
the difference they can make in your life.

Yoga Workshops

LifeForce Yoga® to Manage Your Mood

For thousands of years, yogis have understood what current research in neurobiology and clinical observations are demonstrating-that emotion particularly traumatizing emotion, is stored in the physical body. LifeForce Yoga® interweaves the power of an ancient discipline with current scientific findings. In a safe and accepting environment, you'll learn yogic strategies that can help you maintain your optimum mental health and methods to safely release chronically held tension and repressed emotion in the physical and emotional body.

LifeForce Yoga® to Beat the Blues

Build a Yoga practice to release the obstacles that dampen your spirit and block your
creativity. Release the internal blocks to the free flow of your thoughts and feelings. In
an atmosphere of love and acceptance, you will learn specific Yogic techniques for
beating the blues, letting go of obsessive thinking and befriending your inner critic, so
that you may live more fully from the source of your authenticity.

LifeForce Yoga® Practitioner Training, Level 1 & 2 Click For Info

Learn to help students and clients focus, relax, and have greater access to feeling states. This program interweaves ancient yogic wisdom with current findings in neurobiology. Yoga teachers and mental-health professionals will learn strategies that can safely release chronically held physical tension and repressed emotion.

Through yoga practice, discussion, and practice teaching sessions you will:

  • Design one-on-one yoga sessions for dysthymia (chronic depression), anxiety-based depression, PTSD, and bipolar disorder Learn breathing and meditation practices for addressing dysthymia and anxiety-based depression

  • Add somatic strategies to your clinical practice and yoga classes that increase your clients’ self-awareness, self-acceptance, self-esteem, and ability to cope

  • Experience techniques you can teach your clients and students to do at home.

You will take home tools to enhance your own practice and give you more confidence in working with individuals suffering from depression and anxiety. For more information, please visit the LifeForce Practitioner Training page

Grief in the Tissues

Samskaras, we call them in Sanskrit. They’re the energy blocks that life’s traumas store
in our cells. When we don’t release them, they become obstacles to the free flow of
energy and emotion, which can lead to depression. Learn a practice of holding and
releasing that cleanses the emotional body.

Loving Yourself and Your Creativity

Even when our minds forget, our bodies remember our losses, creating physical
obstructions to our happiness and creativity. In this workshop we’ll do creative exercises
individually and in small groups that will help you move through these obstructions and
free yourself from the tensions that impede the spontaneous low of your thoughts and
feelings. In an atmosphere of love and acceptance, access your creativity and potential
for happiness through a series of gentle Yoga postures, pranayama breathing exercises,
writing exercises, movement, guided visualizations, group sharing and partner work.

Teaching To the Emotional Body: A Yoga Teacher’s Guide to Working with Depression

Learn to identify the needs of your students and offer a sequence of postures,
pranayamas and meditation techniques that energizes and tones the physical and
emotional body for the student suffering from a Tomasic or chronic depression or a
sequence that calms and soothes the autonomic nervous system for the student
suffering from a Rajasic or anxiety-depression. Patanjali has given us a prescription for
depression and anxiety in the Yoga Sutras—Tapah svadhyaya Isvarapranidhanani
kriyayogah. Using this precscription, we will explore specific Yogic techniques to burn
away the impurities so that you and your students remember your magnificence.

Heating the Core

Invigorate your practice and strengthen your poses. We will work from the core of the
body with hip openers, yogic breathing and the yogic locks to strengthen the core to
support your standing postures. We will warm up and stretch from the core, then, break
down basic standing poses, like triangle, to assure that you have a strong foundation for
each of your postures. Whether you’re new to yoga or a long time practitioner, this
posture clinic will help you explore postures in relationship to your own body in an
atmosphere of love and acceptance.
