Power of Love

Power of Love

The power of love is the most exquisite and gentle force in the world. When we experience love, we have confidence, strength, and a sense of belonging. Without that experience, we fail to thrive and rarely make it out of our childhood. We all experience the power of love at some point in our lives. The times when we feel we are without love are invitations to reach within to allow the power of love to flow.

Most of the texts about yoga and meditation were written by the renunciate for the renunciate. Within them we find teachings on rejecting the life of a householder; things like possessions, sexual intimacy, and worldly attachments in favor focusing on spiritual enlightenment. In the Bhagavad Gita, this is called the path of renunciation. The people who choose this path can be found living the monastic life. In Eastern traditions, they do not even touch money, and rely on others for support.

What happens when a householder follows these directions?

The most common experience is a sense of failure. How many of us hear that meditation means clearing the mind of thoughts and give up on the practice before we even try? Those with a strong ego persevere until finding a style of meditation that works. The reality is that we think 6,000 – 60,000 thoughts per day (depending on the research) and our brains process 34 -74 gigabytes of information per day. How could we clear our minds of thoughts? It seems unreasonable for an individual with a household to run, children, a job, bills to pay, and relationships.

Following the teachings from the path of renunciation can lead to a denial of sensorial experiences, like thoughts, feelings, and emotions. This denial becomes a suppression/repression of the life with which we are intimately engaged. The things we repress are our undoing, leading to feelings of failure and further damage our egos. The things we express are our salvation and this is the path of communion.

The Power of Love

The path of communion is the process of welcoming our experiences. We understand that all sensations, feelings, thoughts, and sensations are doorways into the union we seek. For the householder, the denials harden the heart. The acceptances soften the walls around the heart and allow us to fall in love with ourselves again. The heart knows how to heal itself, how to love again, it just needs time to feel. This is the Power of Live – we welcome our current state of existence, we feel it. Through this welcoming, we fall in love with life again, and again. Love is the ultimate power. Its not missing, we haven’t forgotten how to love, we have just stopped ourselves from feeling. We can open the heart again through the simple act of welcoming, of feeling what is, instead of running away for something we think is better.
