What does it mean to tell the truth and to be kind?

video preview

Dear Reader,

In contemplating Truth, let us to the Yoga Sutras of Patanjali. Truth, satya, is the second yama (restraint, or prescription for our relationships with others). The first yama is ahimsa, which means “nonviolence.” Because ahimsa is listed first, it is given primacy. While we must always tell the truth, the yoga sutras require us to do it with kindness. “One should not tell the truth unkindly” is a strong injunction and I wonder how often we follow this guidance.

Certainly one should always tell the truth, but we are told to hold non-violence towards other as the most important practice. How do we reconcile this, when we know telling the truth would hurt someone? What if we view an action as harmless, yet it is received as hurtful? How does this show up in our yoga practice; how do we think of ourselves as deserving kindness? How do we practice receiving kindness?

These questions may have a definite answer, which comes easy. Or they may not. We may find ourselves pondering them in free moments, perhaps even going down rabbit holes in exploration. They are not meant to have a simple answer, rather to set the mind free to wander.

The inquiry questions we have been exploring:

  • What are you doing when you feel most like yourself?
  • What expands you?
  • NEW: What is your true calling? (use your answers from the last two questions to support you in this inquiry)
