Here’s a bone I like to offer my mind first thing in the morning, before I rise from my bed. I find that it soothes my heart and cultivates a feeling of gratitude. And gratitude, in my experience, lightens the heart and eases me into my day. As you inhale say to yourself, “Thou art with me.” As you exhale, repeat to yourself, “Thank you.” Do this as often as you wish for as long as you wish, but at least three times in a row. If using a formal “Thou art” is not comfortable, try substituting “You are.” If the notion of divinity troubles you, feel free to change the first phrase to, “I am not alone.” A good place to practice is in bed, before you go to sleep, then again in the morning before you rise.
I wrote about this practice in the book Yoga for Depression (Broadway Books). You can learn about other simple things that you can do to overcome depression in classes I offer internationally, or you can attend classes given by trained LifeForce Yoga Practitioners in your area.
