Yoga Nidra is more that just a guided meditation practice. It is the crown jewel of yoga. It provides a pathway through sensations, emotions, thoughts, judgements, beliefs, etc, to a more authentic experience of being. The mind is excellent at time travel, existing in the past and/or the future. Yoga Nidra invites us into the present moment which is devoid of thought, judgement, and perception. Being established in present moment awareness (sometimes called mindfulness) is the goal of yoga. As Patanjali’s Yoga Sutras say, “yogas citta vritti nirodah,” yoga is to still the waves of the mind. Yoga Nidra is an excellent practice to support you in this.
Yoga Nidra is also part of a quality self-care practice and in LifeForce Yoga, we believe it is essential. It is said that 30 minutes of Yoga Nidra a day is equivalent to 2-3 hours of sleep. We don’t replace the sleep that we need when we practice Yoga Nidra, instead we augment and enhance it. Some have even reported getting the best sleep of their lives after starting a Yoga Nidra practice. This precious practice has been shown to support trauma and PTSD recovery, as well as destressing and calming the mind.
The best way to practice Yoga Nidra is with a quality teacher. If you are lucky, this teacher may have a regular class in your area. The good news is that Yoga Nidra can be practiced by listening to a CD/MP3. When you practice daily, a preferred CD/MP3 is essential. Even with a training in yoga nidra, it is difficult to lead yourself through the practice.
