A new study, published this month in the JAMA Psychiatry, shows that meditation works as well as a common pharmaceutical treatment for anxiety. 276 adults with untreated anxiety diagnoses participated in the 8-week program. Half the participants received a daily dose of Lexapro. The other half took a Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction meditation program. This consisted of weekly two-and-a-half hour mindfulness classes, 45 minutes of daily meditation homework for eight weeks, and a day-long retreat. At the end of eight weeks, both groups showed a 20% reduction in the severity of their symptoms. A benefit to this study is that it could lead to meditation being covered by insurance.
As a teacher, I have found the biggest hurdle to regular practice is discipline. A person might make the commitment to regular practice, but when they wake up the next morning, there are a multitude of excuses for not practicing. Optimum mental health takes work. It means setting aside some time each day and sticking to your practice.
