What do you do when it all falls apart?

Dear Reader,

As the edifice of perfection and idealization comes crumbling down, where do we turn? With the release of The Files, some thought leaders’ false lives were exposed, Deepak Chopra being the biggest. As he clings to his empire of ego, people are flocking away in anger, regret, and sadness. Rightfully so.

Did he take advantage of us? Do the practices even work? He is not the first and will not be the last to fall from a pedestal. Chopra is just the latest in an extensive line of people using their power to harm others. This does not negate the practices, rather it reinforces the need for them, for all of us to practice them, without interruption.

The aim of yoga practice is to strip away the ego. We are talking about the constrictive aspect of the personality, the part of us who thinks it knows better, the over-inflated ego. When the grip of this ego releases, what remains is a deep sense of connection, peace, and confidence. It is a feeling of coming home, of being wrapped in the arms of loving awareness.

To get there, we need to develop a regular practice. This begins with checking in. Start with three breaths to begin the transition from the external world to the internal world. Notice how the breath moves in the body, where it seems big and where it seems small. From the breath, become aware of the body’s chatter. Perhaps there are loud parts within the body asking for a lot of support. How might we support those parts? There are also quiet parts, whispering stories of ease or constriction. How might we meet and support those parts? Finally, observe the neutral spaces in the body; those places which are experiencing balance and equanimity.

From the place of observation, we invite the practices to serve us. Let them be simple and easy, releasing complexity. This requires our yoga practice to be different each day. Listening and hearing our bodies is the greatest gift. It reestablished the relationship of trust between body and mind. Our body has confidence that we will take care of it and from this faith our body will give us more information and understanding.

This week in Awakening Abundance, we are working with the Heart center, Anahata chakra, the unstruck sound. We will connect with our heart, compassion, and gratitude. Please join us (details and registration).
