Why Aren’t You Practicing Yoga

Three hurdles to building a yoga practice and how to overcome them

Countless studies have been published about the benefits of yoga for the body and mind. Why is it that more people Do not practice? Why didn’t you practice today (maybe you did, but let’s pretend you didn’t for arguments sake)? If you have ever done yoga, you know it makes you feel good, so we cannot use that excuse.

What are the 3 biggest hurdles to practicing yoga?

  1. Time
  2. Access
  3. Knowledge

Time

This is perhaps the biggest excuse. “I don’t have time to practice yoga.”

If yoga equals 60 minutes, then I would agree with you. But it does not. Three deep breaths with focused awareness is a yoga practice. Mindfully releasing your shoulders, lengthening your spine, and breathing is a yoga practice. Lying down and systematically relaxing your muscles is a yoga practice. Even the busiest person has time for one of those simple techniques. For those of us that are home from work on quarantine, we have nothing BUT time.

We can get rid of that excuse.

Access

“There is no yoga class near me,” or “all the yoga classes don’t work with my schedule.”

Yoga is all over the place now. There are on demand yoga websites, free classes on YouTube, streaming classes, even live classes on Zoom. One of the benefits of this current situation is yoga is now available to everyone.

Knowledge

“I just don’t know what to do.”

You do not want to practice all the time with the computer. I get that! Some of us feel tethered to our computers and want a break, fair enough. Many of us have no training in yoga, so once the computer is off, we do not know what to do. Or we are overwhelmed with the options of what to do and we do not know what will work best.

Help is Here
