Every culture has used the breath to balance mood. So, if you are in a state of panic or fearful, your breaths may be short and if you take a few short sniffs of breath and then let it out with a long exhalation, you are physiologically stimulating the autonomic nervous system – the parasympathetic nervous system.
Your breath reflects your mental state and emotional state. So, you can use the breath to shift that mental and emotional state. We talked about how there are lots of ways that people can meet themselves and find ways to take care of themselves.
What yoga offers (for taking care of yourself and finding yourself) is a way to do that. I am passionate about yoga because it contains the breath (as part of the practice.) By using the breath, we can manage our moods and manage our lives.
To practice additional breathing to manage your mood let Amy lead you through a sequence of ten pranayama breathing exercises to help you calm your mind and elevate your mood while listening to the Breathe to Beat the Blues CD. Available as a digital or hard copy.
